Our tour of the Porkkala Parenthesis is a great way to find out more about the history of this fascinating period in Finnish history.
It is now more than 60 years since the Soviet Union abandoned its naval base in Porkkala and the region was returned to Finnish rule. This so-called "parenthesis" period had a substantial influence on the districts of Kirkkonummi, Siuntio and Inkoo, and even on the City of Espoo. The moment when people were able to return to their homes was a very significant event in Finland's recent history.
We start our tour in Majvik, enjoying delicious morning coffee and an introduction to Majvik Manor. After visiting the Soviet-era cemetery at Kolsarby we make our way to the mediaeval Sjundby Manor and discover the building's interesting history on a guided tour. Next is a buffet lunch at the Rantasipi Siuntio Spa, then a visit to the Igor Museum in Degerby, where all the displays and exhibits add to our knowledge of the Porkkala Parenthesis.
Before starting for home, we visit Degerby Deli to see what delights this remarkable delicatessen has to offer - and it's just the right moment to enjoy afternoon coffee!
